Painted Skin (2008)Photobucket

During an invasion General Wang Sheng(Chen Kun) saves Xiao Wei (Zhou Xun) and takes her home. Except General did not really save Xiao Wei. She was a demon that feeds off human hearts. She wears a beautiful human skin to cover her demon face and the hearts keep her skin fresh.

General's wife Pei Rong (Vicki Zhao) treats Xiao Wei like a sister. The three of them live together happily and Xiao Wei starts to fall for in love with the General. The General has feelings for Xiao Wei too.

Pei Rong starts to suspect Xiao Wei is a demon because when she arrived there was cases of heart-taking murders and Xiao Wei's hand miraculously heals after an accident. Pei Rong asks Pang Yong(Donnie Yen)for help.

Pang Yong was an ex-general that ran away from the army when he became tired of war. He was the General's superior and Pei Rong's ex-lover. He came back after being missing for years to see Pei Rong.

Pang Yong recruits a decedent of a family of "ghost busters", Xia Bing (Betty Sun), to help him fight Xiao Wei. No one would believe that the sweet Xiao Wei was a demon and they couldn't find any hard evidence.

Xiao Wei finally takes off her skin in front of Pei Rong and she was made up of worms. Xiao Wei asks Pei Rong to leave the General. Pei Rong made a deal to drink poison and tell everyone herself was the demon so Xiao Wei would not hurt anyone.

The General loves his wife so much that he doesn't care whether she is the demon or not. He saw that she was dying and kills himself. Xiao Wei saw that the General had such a devotion to love and everything she worked for was useless she decides to trade her life for his life. She spits out her life energy and gives it to the General. Once Xiao Wei dies everyone that was under her poison comes back to life.

  1. This is a pretty decent movie...At first I didn't like it as much, for it's not really a HK movie, but rather a collabo with Mainland. Ever since CEPA started a lot of HK producers are moving up North for film projects, and this is a great example. One of the reasons that I liked it, is because it was very creative and has a very clear direction on it's target audience, the Mainlanders. 1.) All three lead actors are from Mainland. (The Hubby, the wife and the Spirit 2.) The shift of focus, in the original literary short story the focus should have been on the Spirit Hunter, Eddie Yin's Character, but in this film it is on Zhou Xun, the Spirit. 3.) in the original story Zhou Xun should be a Ghost and not a Spirit, but because the Chinese govt. doesn't tolerate Ghost movies, so the director wittily transformed her from a Ghost to a Spirit to pass the Chinese film board. All that factors made into a very successful collabo film and made over 3 Billion in the Chinese market. The HK creativity and experience along with the Chinese budget and audience is an equation for big bucks...but I miss the good old HK ghost movies like A Chinese Ghost Story... something is missing and I hate watching movies in Mando..haha
